How to choose the right self-storage unit for your needs

There’s a huge range of storage unit sizes, but how do you work out the right self-storage unit for your needs?

The first thing to know is that here at Clear Space Self Storage we’re here to help you every step of the way. We can give you a helping hand with choosing the right size unit, as well as any additional requirements to meet your needs.

What’s more, our Storage Space Calculator right here on the website provides a quick and easy guide to estimating the amount of storage space you’ll need – select the items you need to store, and our calculator will do the rest.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves: what’s the first step to take in finding the right storage unit to meet your needs?

Get clear on what you need to store

And yes, this can be as simple as writing a list. But, hey, why over-complicate matters? Simple means you’re more likely to get it done!

You may like to use a list-making app, or the back of an envelope. It doesn’t matter. The right choice is whatever suits you best. Simply go from room to room and list what you need to store.

We do recommend you actually do go into each room, because if you stay put compiling your list at the kitchen table it’s easy to miss items. When the item is in front of you, it’s also easier to note key details that can make a difference. For example, a wardrobe that is exceptionally tall, or a chair that is particularly delicate.

Also, is it likely you may need to put more items in storage in the near future? If so, consider adding these to your list so when the time comes you already have the space you need within the one unit.

Identify any special characteristics of items you need to store

We touched on this above, but the shape and weight of items can make a difference to the amount of space needed. For example, you can stack some items on top of each other, whilst others may be too heavy or awkward in shape and will require their own space.

One way to get more clarity on this, particularly if you’re only storing a limited number of items, is to bring them all together in a room and practice stacking and arranging them to work out the most efficient way to store them. You can then run a tape measure round to see how much space you need.

Consider length of time when choosing the right storage unit

Depending on how long you need to store your belongings, it can be important to provide space for ventilation and access.

If you expect you’ll only need to store your items for a short period of time, you can probably pack them close together. Make sure, however, that you don’t stack heavy items on top of less robust pieces. For example, it won’t take long for a heavy chest of drawers to make a lasting impression on your sofa.

When storing belongings for longer periods of time, it can also be important to allow extra space so you can get to any items you may need. If you need to access some of your belongings on regular basis, it’s a good idea to allow enough space in your unit for an aisle. Then make your life easier by arranging those belongings you may need within easy reach of the aisle.

Typical storage unit sizes to meet your needs

At Clear Space Self Storage we offer units of all sizes to provide the most cost-effective options to meet your storage needs. For example, as a general guide:

Small storage units

5’x5’ units are about the size of a small walk-in closet and are ideal for personal items such as clothes, children’s toys, or indeed business files.

5’x10’ units are sufficient for a small amount of furniture such as sofa and chairs, chest of drawers, mattress and bed.

Medium size units

7.5’x10’ units provide space for larger amounts of furniture, or to allow items to be less tightly stacked together.

A 10’x10’ unit provides enough storage space for the contents of a one-bedroom apartment, including appliances, furniture and your personal items boxed up.

Large storage units

10’x15′ storage units will provide enough space for the contents of a two-bedroom apartment or home.

10’x20′ storage units can hold the contents of a three-bedroom apartment or home, including appliances, furniture and your personal items boxed up. These larger units are also ideal for commercial storage racks and inventory.

10’x30′ storage units will provide enough space for the contents of a four- or five-bedroom home. These units are also ideal for commercial and equipment storage.
